Ulster To America

Ulstermen played a major role during the American War of Independence which lasted from 1775 to 1783. Twenty-five of the American generals were of Ulster Scot descent as was half of the revolutionary army. One famous force of regular soldiers was the Pennsylvania Line and it was composed almost entirely of Ulster Scots and the sons of Ulster Scots.

The turning point in the war was the Battle of King's Mountain in South Carolina on 7 October 1780. A body of American militiamen defeated a British force twice its size and took 1,000 prisoners. The five colonels in the American force were all Presbyterian elders of Ulster stock and their men were of the same race and faith.

President Theodore Roosevelt made this comment on the Ulster contribution to the war: "in the Revolutionary war . . . the fiercest and most ardent Americans of all were the Presbyterian Irish settlers and their descendants". He described those Ulster Scots as "a grim, stern people, strong and simple, . . . the love of freedom rooted in their very hearts' core".

The Ulster immigrants brought with them from the shores of Ulster a love of freedom and in America's hour of crisis they fought to defend freedom. They had traveled far across the sea but their courage, convictions and commitment were undiminished.

On Sunday May 26, 1940 King George VI called for a day of national prayer. In towns and villages across the nation the British people gathered to pray. Then early on May 27, Operation Dynamo was launched and during the next nine days 338,226 soldiers ( 198,229 British and 139,997 French ) were evacuated from Dunkirk. Would a day of prayer be called today? I think not. The words 'political correctness' spring to mind. Shame!

JUST A COMMON SOLDIER
(A Soldier Died Today)

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.

And tho' sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today.

He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life?

A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps, a pension small.

It's so easy to forget them for it was so long ago,
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever-shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,

Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

On Wednesday 13th of May 2009 a Service of Thanksgiving was held in the Elim Church, Newtownards, for the life of Henry~Ford (Harry) Marshall. I grew up on the legendary stories of this man who was affectionately known as Happy Harry. What a character he was and in many ways his death and passing marks the end of an era in Greenwell Street. Happy Harry was a saved man and is now with the Lord! Hallelujah!

"Gentleman" Jim Reeves, famous for velvet voice, died in a plane crash on July 31, 1964. A life-sized sculpture of the famous singer marks his grave on a one-acre, tree-covered plot of ground three miles east of Carthage,Texas on U.S. Highway 79. Thousands of visitors from every state and many foreign countries have visited the site. In 1967, his favorite dog Cheyenne was buried inside the concrete circle surrounding the grave of his former master just a few feet to one side and to the rear, in just about the same position Cheyenne would have assumed in following his master.

Every 11th Night local Lambeg drummers gather under the Orange Arch at Francis Street in Newtownards. They play for a couple of hours to a crowd which sometimes reaches a couple of hundred people. This year a loyalist band ( minus their uniforms ) came marching down Mary Street and joined in with a rendition of the Sash.

The town owes its existence to the Anglo-Norman policy of building castles to control conquered territories. John De Courcey established one such strong point where Castle Gardens mill stood. It was first officially known as Villa Nova De Blaethwyc (the Blathmaic being the people of the district) but the colloquial Gaelic name of Baile Nua (New Town) was more commonly used and indeed up until the eighteenth century Newtownards was called Bally No by its inhabitants. The suffix Ards derives from the Irish word Ard which means high and refers to the surrounding hills which give this descriptive name to the narrow peninsula which stretches from the south of the town.
The arms of the town tell us more about its history. The Scottish influences shown by the St. Andrews cross in the shield, the twelfth century castle around which the town grew, through the De Courcey age and the influences of the savages of the Ards through the motto `Fidelis Atque Fortus' (in English faithful and brave). The arms of the borough also have references to the Montgomery and Londonderry families, to the association with Augustinian and Dominican abbeys and priories and the two industries, linen and rose growing, which helped establish the town as one of the industrial centres of the province.
The Montgomery family were the Lords of Newtownards for a century and a half. The third viscount spent two years as a prisoner of Owen Roe O'Neill and after his release he joined the royalist cause and fought Cromwellian forces.

HAPPY 60TH ISRAEL

Celebrations have taken place across Israel to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state.
Fireworks, concerts and an aerial display were among the events laid on, while Israeli families enjoyed picnics and barbecues for the national holiday.
Israel declared itself an independent state on 14 May 1948, three years after the end of World War II, and the death of six million Jews in the Holocaust.

Portavogie and The Twelfth.

The Twelfth is being held in Portavogie this year and as you can see they are making sure everyone knows it!

the statue in front of the large sign is the memorial to the fisher men who have perished at sea. The last time the Twelfth was in Portavogie it rained heavy the whole day and i think i was about twelve but i can remember it so we hope this year will be sunny and warm.

Antrim Free Presbyterian Church

Preached yesterday in our Antrim Church. Enjoyed the day and good to meet again the Rev. James Beggs and his wife Margaret who attend Antrim since Mr Beggs retired . Rev John Armstrong is the Minister in Antrim. Beautiful building and a real credit to the members there.

Great day on Friday 14th March when Catherine Huddleston and Jeffrey Park were married in Grace Free Presbyterian Church. The reception ws held at Galgorm Resort and Spa, Ballymena. Catherine is the daughter of Robert and Margaret Huddleston from our own church. Robert is one of our Elders.

Took these pics tonight at around 9.20pm just outside my front door. We have'nt had snow like this for a while. Had to drive from Carrowdore to Newtownards this evening and it was slow going. Strange thing was the thunder and lightning that accompanied the snow fall. My sister Tracy is here from Australia so its good she got to see some snow.

Bush at his pre Christmas press conference said, 'Happy Holidays'. Oh how politically correct! Our Queen at her Christmas broadcast on Christmas day made reference to the birth of our Lord and wished all a 'Happy Christmas'. Shame on Bush and God Bless the Queen!
